Co-founded in 2009 by Hiroshi Fujiwara and Daisuke Murakami, retaW encapsulates the essence of the effortless Japanese lifestyle based in the upmarket Aoyama neighbourhood of Tokyo. Creating relaxing and natural atmospheres, each fragrance is developed with a pedantic amount of care and sophistication to soothe the body and soul.

Pronounced ri-‘tü, retaW (water, reversed) focuses on formulating clean, practical lifestyle products, introducing 100% natural oils and innovative apothecary techniques. Science, nature and culture play integral roles in retaW, the smell of something is much more abstract to convey – relationships are formed from a particular moment, or memory. If you’ve not experienced that which they are describing, it’s difficult to just imagine a scent.

With this film, we are trying to place the viewer into a space where they can fully immerse themselves and have a sensory experience. Shot over a few days in Tokyo on 16mm, 8mm and 4K HD, the film draws the viewer into retail’s sensory world, the hope being they can fully immerse themselves the world retaW have created.
